Choosing a board

Which Plasterboard Does Your Room Need?

Not every board suits every room, and using the wrong one is a problem you only find out about later. What we would use where:

Standard

General Rooms

The everyday board for bedrooms, lounges, hallways and most ceilings.

Moisture

Bathrooms & Kitchens

Moisture-resistant board for wet areas, shower walls and utility rooms.

Fire

Garages & Lofts

Fire-rated board where building regulations call for it, such as garage conversions and loft conversions.

Acoustic

Sound Reduction

Denser board for party walls, home offices, media rooms and between flats.

Insulated thermal boards are also available where a cold external wall needs bringing up to standard at the same time as being lined. We will tell you on the quote visit which board your room actually needs.

How it is done

How We Board A Room

Boarding is the stage nobody sees once it is finished, which is exactly why it is worth doing properly. Every flaw in the boarding shows through the skim.

2Fix boardsScrewed or dabbed, staggered joints

Finishing The Boards

Once the boards are fitted, we can finish the surface with professional skimming in Basildon or tape and jointing, depending on the finish required.

Skimming

A thin coat of finishing plaster across the whole surface, giving a continuous, smooth finish ready for paint. The usual choice for domestic rooms.

Tape & Jointing

Joints and screw heads filled, taped and sanded rather than skimming the whole wall. Faster, less mess, and common on commercial work and larger projects.

Questions we get asked

Plasterboarding FAQs

Fifty years of walls and ceilings in Essex means we have heard most of these on the doorstep.

What is the difference between dot and dab and stud walls?

Dot and dab fixes board straight onto an existing brick or block wall with adhesive dabs, so you lose very little room space. A stud wall is a new timber or metal frame with board fixed to both sides, used where you are creating a wall rather than lining one.

Can you board over an old plaster wall or ceiling?

Often yes, and it is usually cleaner and quicker than hacking everything off. Overboarding is common on old lath and plaster ceilings and on textured ceilings people want flattened. The existing surface needs to be sound enough to take the fixings, which we check on the visit.

Do I need skimming or tape and jointing?

Skimming gives a continuous smooth finish across the whole surface and is what most homeowners want. Tape and jointing fills just the joints and screw heads, which is faster and less messy — more common on commercial jobs or where the walls are going to be papered or boarded over later.

How soon can it be skimmed after boarding?

Usually straight after. Boarding and skimming are often run as one job across consecutive days, which saves you a second set of visits and a second lot of dust sheets.

Do I need moisture-resistant board in a bathroom?

Yes, in wet areas and anywhere behind a shower or bath. It costs a little more than standard board and saves a great deal of trouble later. Same for fire-rated board in garage and loft conversions, where building regulations require it.

How much mess does it make?

Boarding is a lot less messy than hacking off old plaster. Floors and furniture are covered, offcuts are bagged as we go and we clear up at the end of each day. Our reviews mention the tidying up more than anything else, which tells you where we put the effort.

Can you fit insulated boards?

Yes. Insulated thermal boards line and insulate in one go, which suits cold external walls. If insulation is the main reason for the job, ask about cork spray render too — it may suit the wall better.

Do you cover areas outside Basildon?

Yes. We regularly work across Billericay, Wickford, Benfleet, Rayleigh, Laindon, Pitsea, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. If you are further out, call and ask.

Often Carried Out Alongside

Plasterboarding is usually one stage of a bigger job. These are the services most often booked with it.
