Coving Sizes & Profiles

Three profiles cover most homes in Basildon. Which one suits your room comes down to ceiling height and how much of a feature you want the coving to be.

Choosing a size

Which Size Coving Suits Your Room?

The usual mistake is going too small. Coving that is under-scaled for the room tends to disappear, while a deeper profile in a low room can make the ceiling feel like it is closing in. As a rough guide:

Standard ceilings

  • Most modern homes and new builds
  • 100mm is the usual choice
  • Neat finish without dominating the room

Higher ceilings & larger rooms

  • Period properties, large lounges, hallways
  • 127mm holds its own in the space
  • Also useful for masking settlement cracks

A feature finish

  • Traditional and character properties
  • 135mm cornice for a decorative profile
  • Pairs well with a plaster ceiling rose

Not sure? We will bring samples to the quote and hold them up against the ceiling so you can see the difference before you decide.

How it is fitted

How We Fit Coving

The difference between coving that looks fitted and coving that looks stuck on is almost entirely in the mitres and the joint filling.

1Measure & set outLines marked, walls prepped
2Cut mitresInternal and external corners
3Fix in placeAdhesive, held true to the line
4Fill & finishJoints filled, ready to paint

Walls and ceilings are checked first — coving follows the line it is fixed to, so anything badly out gets addressed before we start rather than after.

Corners are cut and offered up dry before anything is fixed, lengths are run to keep joints to a minimum, and every joint and mitre is filled flush. You are left with a continuous line ready for the decorator, not a row of visible seams.

Coving FAQs

Fifty years of ceilings in Essex means we have heard most of these on the doorstep.

What size coving should I have?

100mm suits most standard rooms, 127mm works better in larger rooms and higher ceilings, and the 135mm cornice is for when you want it to be a feature. We bring samples to the quote so you can see them against your own ceiling rather than guessing from a brochure.

Does coving hide cracks between the wall and ceiling?

Yes, that is one of the most common reasons people fit it. Coving covers the junction where settlement cracks tend to open up, and a deeper profile hides more. If the cracking is structural rather than normal settlement, that needs looking at first — we will say so if we see it.

Can you replace just a damaged section?

Usually yes. We cut out the damaged length, fit new to match and blend the joints in so the repair is not obvious once painted. Matching an unusual or very old profile is not always possible — send a photo when you call and we will tell you straight.

Do you fit coving before or after skimming?

After. Coving goes on once the walls and ceilings are skimmed and any repairs are done, so it sits on a true, finished surface. If we are doing both jobs, we plan it in that order as a matter of course.

How long does coving take to fit?

A single room is usually a day including filling and sanding. A whole house depends on the number of rooms and how many corners are involved — corners take the time, not the straight runs.

Can it be painted straight away?

Once the joints are filled, sanded and dry, yes. We leave it ready for the decorator, or we can arrange the painting alongside if you want the room finished in one go.

Do you fit ceiling roses too?

Yes. Plaster ceiling roses are supplied and fitted, and they pair well with the deeper cornice profile in period rooms. Any electrical disconnection and reconnection around the light fitting needs an electrician.

Do you cover areas outside Basildon?

Yes. We regularly work across Billericay, Wickford, Benfleet, Rayleigh, Laindon, Pitsea, Brentwood, Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. If you are further out, call and ask.

Often Carried Out Alongside

Coving is often fitted after skimming or ceiling repairs, giving rooms a clean finished look before painting and decorating.
