PLASTERERS (SKIMMING) IN BASILDON ESSEX AND SURROUNDING AREAS
Plastering/skimming is the application of a finish plaster either to new plasterboard or to existing walls or ceilings to create a smooth surface for painting or wallpapering. However, “the term “plastering” is more general and can mean that more than just plastering is required, e.g. boarding and plastering or repairing holes etc as plastering, but generally people use the two terms to describe the same process plastering & (skimming). It’s just that one term is more specific than the other.
SKIMMING
Is the term used when the finished top coat of plaster is applied to a solid base. It is just a thin layer of fine smooth plaster. Which is too thin and fragile to be applied directly to brick by itself. For best results, it is applied in two coats. A base for the skim plaster to be applied to can either be plasterboard or solid existing old plastered walls. A coat or two of p.v.a is normally applied and let to go tacky before skimming is started.
Once skim plaster is applied to a good solid base. An experienced plasterer can trowel it up to produce a beautiful strong, smooth, and flawless finish. That can just be painted to look stunning. In the majority of cases, a re-skim is all that is needed to bring the room back to life. Plastering over artex would normally just involve preparing the ceiling first then re-skimming. As long as the artex was solid and the pattern was not too prominent.
